Kratom hearing draws competing calls for a ban and tighter rules

Published October 16, 2026 · Hearing October 14 · Wilton Wire

Saratoga County’s proposed ban on kratom sales and distribution drew sharply different requests at its October 14 hearing. The published minutes record testimony and the hearing’s closure, but no vote adopting the proposal.

Supporters urged action over addiction, product marketing and access. Opponents asked the county to distinguish natural leaf products from concentrated products and consider testing, labeling and age restrictions. A county addiction-treatment clinician supported the proposal while warning that treatment capacity and enforcement would need attention. These were speakers’ arguments, not medical findings established by the hearing.

The clerk reported 48 emails from 34 people: 26 opposed and eight supported the proposal. Some writers did not give their locations; these counts are not a survey of county residents. Hearing minutes, page 7.
